手塚貴晴さんという建築家がいる。一種の天才なのだと思うのだが、5年ほど前、TVで見た光景が忘れられない。
部下の設計者が徹夜で作ってきた建築模型を一目見るなり「これはゴミだね」と言って、ガシャリと壊してしまったのだ。
僕はそのころ駆け出しコンサルタントになったばかりで、部下の人の痛みがよく分かった。
それと同時に、本当にたくさんのことも学んだ。

・モノには価値があるモノとないモノがある
・「頑張ったか」は価値があるかどうかとは無関係
・価値がないと判断したときは、それをオブラートに包んで伝えるべきではない
・価値があるかどうかは、作った本人には判断出来ないことがある
・作ったモノがゴミなだけで、作った人のことまではゴミと言っていない
・「ゴミだね」に傷ついていたら、クリエイティブな仕事はできない
そして、「ゴミだね」への反論は、ゴミではないモノを作ることしか許されないこと。

もう一つ大事なこと。
「ゴミだね」を恐れて指示を待っていると、永遠にゴミしか作れない。
・価値があると信じて自分の頭で考えたモノを作る。
・そして「ゴミだね」と言われる。
・そこでイチイチ立ち止まらずに、また自分の頭で考えて作る。
この繰り返しでしか、プロフェッショナルになれない。
傷ついたことを「ゴミだね」と言った人のせいにしているうちは、決してプロフェッショナルにはなれない。
